Homemade Doritos-Style Chips

  • This Homemade “Doritos-Style” Tortilla Chips recipe is the ultimate snack-time revolution for BeauScott Recipes! We all crave that iconic nacho cheese crunch, but making them at home in the Air Fryer transforms them from a “guilty pleasure” into a wholesome, high-energy snack your family can feel good about eating every single day.
  • A Family Obsession: In our home, we are a “Crunch Family.” Whether it’s game day, a movie night, or just a Tuesday afternoon snack, we are always reaching for something with a snap. I created these Homemade Doritos because I wanted all that bold, cheesy flavor without the deep-frying or the preservatives. We now make these 3 to 4 times a week—they are that addictive! The “Better-for-You” Crunch: The magic happens in the air fryer. You get that “shattering” crispness using just a fraction of the oil. It’s the perfect combination of everything we love—corn tortillas, bold spices, and a healthy heart-conscious twist. Once you hear that first crunch, you’ll never go back to store-bought!
  • To get that “Authentic Nacho” texture and ensure every chip is perfectly coated, follow these three air-fryer secrets:
  • The “Single Layer” Rule: Don’t overcrowd the basket! For the ultimate crunch, air fry the chips in a single layer. If you stack them, they will steam instead of crisping up.
  • Troubleshooting: If your chips feel a bit soft after cooling, pop them back in the air fryer for 60 seconds. They “set” and get even crunchier as they cool down on the counter!
    The “Secret” Nacho Spice Blend
  • The Cheesy Base: To get that classic “Dorito” flavor, use Nutritional Yeast or a high-quality Cheddar Powder. Nutritional yeast adds a wonderful nutty, cheesy depth while keeping the snacks naturally vegan-friendly!
  • The Smoky Kick: Combine Smoked Paprika, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, and a pinch of Cumin. This mirrors the complex savory profile of the original chip but with a fresher, more vibrant taste.
The “Zesty” Finish: Don’t forget a tiny pinch of Citric Acid or Dried Lime Zest. That subtle “tang” is what makes the chips truly addictive and keeps you reaching for the next one.
  • The Heat Level: If you love “Flaming Hot” style, add a half-teaspoon of Chili Powder or Cayenne to your blend.
  • The Ultimate Party Platter: Serve these warm directly out of the air fryer with a side of my Homemade Pesto (for a fun fusion twist!) or a bright, fresh salsa. They are sturdy enough to hold a mountain of toppings, making them the perfect base for “Gourmet Nachos” using your Taco-Seasoned Beef and fresh arugula. The “Boosted” Lunch: These chips are the perfect crunchy companion to my 3 Easy Gourmet Sandwiches or a bowl of the One-Pot Sausage Soup.
  • Storage & Freshness: While they usually disappear in minutes, you can store these in an airtight container for up to 1week. If they lose their “snap,” just a quick 1-minute “refresh” in the air fryer brings them right back to life!

Instructions

  • Cut 8 pieces of corn tortillas into small pieces, just like in the video.
  • Put them all in the air fryer, and try to separate them evenly.
  • Lightly drizzle olive oil over the tortilla pieces, just enough to coat them evenly.
  • Air fry at 355°F (180°C) for 18 minutes. Pause halfway through (around 8 minutes) to stir the tortilla pieces for even cooking.
  • In the ziplock bag, put all seasoning in there; 2 teaspoons cheddar cheese powder, 1 teaspoon white cheddar cheese powder, 1 teaspoon buttermilk powder, 2 teaspoons Tomato Powder, 1 teaspoon Paprika, half teaspoon Garlic powder, half teaspoon Onion powder, 1 table spoon Nutritional Yeast, 2 teaspoons Taco Seasoning, A Pinch of Salt (Optional)
  • Mix and shake it until well combined.
  • Recheck the mixture and break apart any big lumps of seasoning to make sure it’s evenly blended.
  • After a total of 18 minutes of cooking, put the chips into the bag and shake until all the seasoning is evenly coated. (put the chips in the seasoning bag while it’s still warm otherwise the seasoning won’t stick on the chips)
  • Enjoy!
